Renaming, Saving, and Organizing Camera Photos
In Windows 7 Using Microsoft Office Picture Manager

Connect your camera to your PC, or insert your memory chip.
Navigate to the folder containing your photos and open it.
In this example the Nikon folder is open, with 5 files listed to the right.

The Rename Task Pane opens to the right of the Picture Manager window. Notice the File Name box, the current picture name, and the Previous and Next buttons circled below.

Delete the text in the File Name box.
Type the name of the photo in the File Name box, and click OK. Notice the file name in the lower left corner changes also.

Warren Haynes

Click the Next arrow, shown below circled in red with the “Next” tool tip showing.

The next picture in the list opens, in this example, DCIM1290.jpg. The subject is blurry so it is not a good picture to keep. Here is the organizational part of this tip: rename only the pictures you intend to keep. If you do not intend to keep the photo, as is the case in this example, click the Next button without renaming the photo.

Cycle through all of the photos, renaming only the ones you will keep.

Peter Frampton

When you have reviewed all of the photos, close the Microsoft Picture Manager and open the folder containing your files.

My example above contains 5 photos. Notice I have renamed 3 of the 5, the “keepers”.
Click on the files names you have not renamed and delete them.
Save the remaining pictures in a folder that describes them, in my example, Gov’t Mule Concert, Taft Theater. You are finished! You have renamed your photos, kept only the good ones, and organized them into a file that you will easily be able to find later.

Here is a great method for organizing all of your photos on a computer:

folders and files

Using this method, you will be able to organize all of your photos, keeping only the good ones and deleting the not-so-good ones; rename the photos all at once; and keep your photos organized. Just think, you will actually be able to find that photo of Aunt Mildred at her 99th birthday party without looking for 3 hours!
